Flag Gridiron (or Flag Football) is a modified version of tackle American football. Instead of tackling players to the ground, the defensive team tackles a player by pulling their flag or flag belt. The object of the game is to score touchdowns by advancing the ball up the field by running or throwing the ball, and crossing the end zone line.
In the USA, American football has been played since the mid-1800s. The first college game of football occurred between Princeton and Rutgers in 1895. The game of flag football has been around for as nearly as long as tackle football. Flag football was played as a recreational activity for American military personal in the 1940s. Recreational leagues began in the USA in the 1940s and 50s.
Flag Gridiron requires each player to have a flag or flag belt, an American football, and cones to designate the end zones. No helmets or shoulder pads are allowed. Good flag gridiron players can start, stop, and change directions quickly. Players can work on their agility by running round cones, and jumping rope. Anyone can play Flag Gridiron! Men, women and children!

Physical activity is vital for a child’s development and lays the foundation for a healthy and active life. Activity for children needs to be made up of both structured (i.e. intentionally taught) physical activity and unstructured, spontaneous activity. Parents, as active role models, should encourage children to participate in physical activity.
The benefits of being active for young children include:
- Kids who exercise are more likely to keep exercising as an adult
-
Exercise helps kids achieve and maintain a healthy body weight and have
improved cardiovascular fitness
- Regular physical activity helps build and maintain strong, healthy muscles, bones and joints
-
Exercise aids in the development of important interpersonal skills—this is especially true for participation in team sports
- Exercise improves the quantity and quality of sleep
-
Research shows that exercise promotes improved school attendance and enhances academic performance
- Kids who exercise have greater confidence, self-esteem and better self-images
-
Participating in regular physical activity prevents or delays the development of many chronic diseases (e.g., heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension) and promotes health
- Children who are active report fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression and a better overall mood
-
Exercise helps improve motor coordination, enhances the development of various motor performance skills and provides the opportunity to develop fundamental movement skills
- Physical activity improves balance, coordination, strength and helps develop and maintain flexibility
- It improves posture
- Exercise helps to establish connections between different parts of the brain
- Improved concentration and thinking skills
- Exercise assists in relieving stress and promoting relaxation
- Sports provides opportunities to develop social skills and make friends

College Football Coaches in the USA are starting to identify Australia as a hot spot for talent…
Two Australians have been offered a Scholarship to play College Football at Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Bowling Green is a Division 1 College Football program and their Scholarship covers Accommodation, Meals and Education on top of the excellent coaching and competition.
Congratulations to Dylan Harrison and Elijah Sinapati, both from Queensland, Australia who were discovered last year at the Gridiron Australia Future Stars Camp on the Gold Coast. Elijah (6′ 5″ tall and 141 kg, 310 pounds) and Dylan (6′ 7″ tall and 153kg, 336 pounds) were approached by National Team Coach, Paul Manera, to see if they would be interested in pursuing a College Football Scholarship.
Paul Manera, Director of Bring it on Sports and a former College Football player at the University of Hawaii and Itawamba Community College in Mississippi, is helping Australian’s obtain college scholarships to the USA.
Paul stated that “Having played both Junior College Football and Major College Football it has helped me with my knowledge on how to get a scholarship because I had to do it the hard way so hopefully I can now make it easier for those that follow. We just want to make sure that we put the players on the right track and the earlier we discover them the easier the process becomes…. we need to make sure that the players are not losing eligibility and that they are also on track academically and athletically”
Paul and the team at Bring it on Sports assist athletes by providing them with the right advice and reaching out to his network of College Football Coaches in the USA.
